tandemPLUS

The mentoring program for students with parenting or family responsibilities and their peers

What is tandemPLUS?

When a student’s family situation changes, it can lead to time and financial challenges that often affect the course of studies. The tandemPLUS mentoring program aims to promote equal opportunities and diversity at LMU by easing the burden on students with family or caregiving responsibilities and sensitizing their environment to this changed phase of life.

In order to not lose the connection to your studies, or in order to restore it, a mentee receives technical and organizational support from a fellow student for one semester.

Who can participate?

  • Mentees are student parents, expectant parents, and students who have family members whom they care for, in need of professional and organizational support for their studies.
  • Mentors are experienced students in the same subject area who provide their mentees with professional and organizational support.
  • Mentees and mentors can apply together as a tandem or individually.

  • Since illnesses or important family-related appointments are rarely predictable, the academic support for mentees is designed to provide the flexibility they need to balance their studies with family responsibilities. The goal of tandemPLUS is to help mentees stay connected to their studies and offer guidance on how to continue shaping their academic journey.
  • As mentors study the same subject as their mentees, they are well-positioned to offer both content-related and organizational support with academic tasks. This includes taking lecture notes, assisting with course preparation and review, creating study plans, borrowing and returning library books, and helping with exam preparation. However, mentors are not responsible for any family-related duties.
  • After successfully completing the program, participating in a feedback session, and submitting a final report, participants will receive a certificate of participation.
  • Mentees should be in their first degree program, meaning they do not yet hold an academic degree (exception: Master’s students are eligible).

  • The strengthening of soft skills, the development of the fundamentals of time and project management, and the successful management of a mentoring relationship are just some of the key qualifications that tandemPLUS aims to impart, which are intended to facilitate future entry into professional life. Additionally, mentors can reinforce content for their own studies through the exchange with their mentees, thereby deepening their didactic skills.
  • Because we expect a great deal of commitment from our mentors, their efforts are rewarded in the form of a student assistant contract for 4 hours per week.
  • Mentors are available to their respective mentees for one semester, dedicating 16 hours per month, which can be allocated flexibly within each tandem. During particularly intensive work periods, hours can also be "worked in advance."
  • Participation in the three accompanying workshops is a special privilege for the tandems and does not count toward the mentors' contractually agreed-upon working hours.
  • After successfully completing the program, participating in a feedback session, and submitting the final report, mentors receive a certificate of participation.
  • Mentors primarily take on study-related tasks. This includes, for example, preparing lecture notes, assisting with course preparation and follow-

  • After the application deadline, potential tandems will be invited to a meet-and-greet. Additionally, candidates who have applied individually will be matched, taking into account their field of study, number of semesters completed, personal strengths, and needs.
  • If the potential tandems have not met before, an initial meeting will be arranged. Following this, applicants will decide for themselves whether they would like to work and learn together for six months.
  • The tandemPLUS program includes three coaching workshops, where mentees and mentors will learn time management and study strategies, and receive tips on how to make their mentoring work more efficient.

The workshops are mandatory and are a privilege for all participants. All tandems are advised speaker and communication trainer, Frau Dr. Susanne Frölich-Steffenas well as by the office of the women's representative, providing support throughout the entire turn.

Application

The program only takes place in the winter semester. The next cycle runs from October 2024 to March 2025.

In urgent, justified exceptions or emergencies and depending on the budgetary situation, it is also possible to apply for a different period, an earlier start or a longer duration of the program.

The application phase for the winter semester 2024/2025 ended on June 30, 2024. You are welcome to apply for the winter semester 2025/2026 from May 2025. Further information on deadlines and dates will follow shortly.

We welcome applications from tandems who already know each other and are applying together, but applications from students who want to apply alone - without a tandem partner - are also possible. In this case, we will endeavor to find a suitable mentor or mentee for you. Accordingly, applications from students who would like to become a mentor are of course also very welcome. In all cases, please use the application forms on our website.

Please send the completed form by e-mail to frauenbeauftragte@lmu.de.
